The Liberal Arts

"They’re playing the accordion up in the house. No one is thinking much about Freud or morphosyntactic typology. We’ll think about them tomorrow. Someone might have made a remark about Durkheim or Eliade. I remember nothing about them now, have just a vague image of a totem pole and we ourselves dancing around it with fire. I spent the next day falling asleep reading Max Weber atop a picnic table. I finished the book in two days and remember nothing about it. Not even the name. I spoke brilliantly about it in class. Soon I would break out in festering rashes and have to drop a class on the history of the Incan empire."
